I
had actually meant to post this on Saturday but mothers day weekend was far
busier than I would have liked. I barely
got the opportunity to take the picture before I was off and running. In the end, I didn’t end up getting to bed until
past 2:00am.
But
that is another post all together and I will get there eventually!
And
it has nothing to do with the market.
The
first of the summer fruits is here and I couldn’t be happier!
Every other stand had cherries, peaches are beginning to show themselves, and a couple of places even had decent apricots.
Mom
and I couldn’t help ourselves. We bought
two large scoops of cherries and a bunch of apricots.
The
peaches were incidentally and still hard so even today I have not tasted them.
The
strawberries continue to be rather uninspired and most of them ended up
macerated for a Mother’s Day dessert.
Corn
is also making its appearance, finding its way in small quantities to the Farmers
Market tables.
I
had actually expected to pick up some fresh herbs at the market but the herb
vendor did not make it this time. Instead I picked up those lovely brown eggs and bought my herbs
elsewhere. I suppose, since they were
for the same dish it all balanced out.
If
the herbs had been there I probably wouldn’t have gotten the eggs. The eggs were beautiful with bright
yellow-orange yolks. They were so
incredible fresh that the white barely spread when I broke them into the
bowl. And after mother’s day breakfast I
still have four legs. I am still
contemplating what to do with them.
Other
than that the only thing worth mentioning and it is barely seen in the picture,
are my favorite fingerling potatoes. Pale on the outside and buttery colored on the inside they are just
perfect for roasting.
I
have almost come to take them for granted. They are like the incredible bread that I buy from my favorite bakery
stand, staples of my basket that I buy so often that I fear every time I talk
about them I sound like a broken record!
I
was hoping to get some limes for yet another cooking project but alas citrus is
seriously in decline. Only a few stands
had a scattered offering of citrus and none of it was terribly exciting.
Well
except for the tiny, sweet tangerines that I talked about last week.
For
this week I was content with what I found. Just wish the large tomato crops would come in already. The tomatoes I find are adequate but not
spectacular. I miss the bright yellow,
orange, and red tomatoes of summer. This
is what I want:
